Yes, The Office seems to be working for American audiences. Not for me, but for at least enough people to make the show financially viable.
Kath & Kim was another (very very sad) story. Coupling was an abomination. There was lots of talk about bringing Top Gear to the US with a cast that included Adam Carolla, and that didn't even get past the talking stage.
There's still no American Doctor Who (thank the TV gods, who needs another version anyway and the only American "Doctor" I would approve is Neil Patrick Harris and he's already working).
I'm not surprised that Prime Suspect is in the works at NBC. It's a police procedural with a strong female character lead (get those 18 to 49 women tuning in) and US audiences know the show and that helps sell an American version.
At the same time there's reason to be surprised, too. With Leno in at 10 pm, NBC doesn't have much reason to develop a bunch of new drama pilots and how many procedurals can you have on one network, anyway? Also, between the doctor and cop shows, there's almost no room for the low cost crap that they claim to wanna stock the first primetime hour with, like Biggest Loser and Celeb Combover Apprentice.
They won't land a Helen Mirren, seen here in the red bikini that made all those waves last summer. The closest thing to Mirren we have is Meryl and there's no way she's jumping into a 13- or 22-episode committment. She's having too much fun enjoying a remarkable run of hits at your local theatre.
Hey, maybe they'll produce the show and hand it off to one of their cable partners, or even better another network.
It'll be interesting to see what becomes of this. Most interesting is who gets the lead. Have any ideas? Start a discussion below, I'll check in as it grows.
The Variety article from where I gleaned all this goes on to say that it'll show up as a backdoor pilot (2 hr. presentation) and is part of a deal where NBC will develop at least two more ITV properties for their air including one blind scripted project and one blind nonscripted project.
Might one of those be an NBC adaptation of Primeval? Because that would be a great way to get all those poor pitiful characters out of that tree that they were stranded in when the ITV series ended this year.
Now, after the jump, a special clip from the BBC Comic Relief benefit this past year. Watch Helen Mirren and Robbie Coltrane reprise their famous detective characters for a clip called Prime Cracker.
It's after the jump.
