THR.com Video -- Showrunners Discuss the State of the Medium

Wga_strike_lindelof_cherry Though the video is mostly Lost's Damon Lindelof -- seen here during the strike with Marc Cherry, Wisteria Lane's own -- with a little Matthew Weiner (Mad Men) and David Shore (House) thrown in, the interview by James Hibberd also includes Craig Thomas from How I Met Your Mother (the only traditional comedy represented) and Bryan Fuller (Pushing Daisies).

Here's a taste, clip is after the jump:

THR: Ratings in general have been down post-strike. Is that having an impact?

Lindelof: I can't process the fact that people used to, at 9 o'clock on Thursday night, watch (ABC's) "Grey's Anatomy," and now those people have decided, because it was off the air for 100 days, to play chess instead. They're still watching it -- I just think they're watching it on their TiVos.

Weiner: "The Sopranos" was off for 18 months. And I know, because I wasn't paid during that period. (Laughter.) It comes back, and people want to watch it. But I have to say that part of our leverage during the strike was that in the strike of '88, people changed their viewing habits. I don't think they're playing chess. They're watching other things. They're playing video games.

ABC's Lost -- 3 More Seasons, 16 Episodes Per Year

But probably most important for true devotees (from the Hollywood Reporter):

"Lost" executive producers/showrunners Damon Lindelof and Carlton Cuse, who have been vocal about setting up an endgame for the show, have signed on to stay for the remainder of the series' run. Their separate new eight-figure deals with "Lost" producer ABC TV Studio include their services on the show as well as multiyear development pacts set to kick in when "Lost" bows out during the 2009-10 season.

"Due to the unique nature of 'Lost,' we knew it would require an end date to keep the integrity and strength of the show consistent throughout and to give the audience the payoff they deserve," ABC Entertainment president Stephen McPherson said. "Having Damon Lindelof and Carlton Cuse signed on to complete the journey of this show was critical to me and the network. Damon and Carlton have tremendous talent, and we're thrilled that they'll be with the show throughout its run."

And he's absolutely right (yes, occasionally even I have a kind word for a network chief). Always best to finish with the team that brought you there. Plus, it's good biz for Disney, they need to maintain these relationships. Seems to me that a bunch of the players on the drama side have been skipping around from network to network. I have to think that a steady relationship is the better way to go.

I think the TV nets suffer from horny guy syndrome somtimes. They're always looking over your shoulder at the next big thing and forgetting about the perfectly good talent they have right there in front of them.

Think about NBC and Tim Kring, if they had dismissed him as "the guy whose show is just hanging on here" when he pitched Heroes, we wouldn't be talking about exploding cities and eating brains today.
