UPDATE: I watched the clip after the jump. It's not like it's important for the actor to plays the Doctor to have been a fan, but Matt Smith makes great pains to talk about his father's and grandfather's connection to the show and mentions Tom Baker and all but him? Nothin'. Of course, that's partly due to his age, I guess. Because as I've said all over the web, he's so so young. In fact, I'm old enough to be his Dad and I don't know if I'm comfortable with that.
... I know! Never heard of him before now either. We'll both meet him in the clip after the jump from YouTube and the BBC.
I keep thinking of that SNL sketch from years ago where David Spade works for Dick Clark Productions, and he turns to the office visitor and says, "And we know you from ..."
I'm disappointed it's not Paterson. I was really looking forward to that.
Above is a photo of Matt Smith who played a character called Danny Foster in a series called Party Animals for the BBC.
Also pictured left, photo by Rebecca Reid.
In the first season of Secret Diary of a Call Girl, he played the guy that Hannah brought home from the department store after the bad trick that she got sent that led her to fire her procurer.
He also did Ruby in the Smoke and The Shadow in the North with Billie for BBC and PBS Masterpiece Theatre.
He's 26 years old. His birthday is two days after mine which makes him a Scorpio, not that I know anything about astrology, but I know so little about him I feel like I have to say as much as I know.
He's another Doctor with a back injury, which I think is not such a great idea. From his IMDB bio:
As a teenager he was a talented footballer and considered turning
professional, but had to give it up, following a back injury, and
turned to acting instead.
He's a Norwich University grad. Only five years out of University and he's the Doctor?
He's just a bit young for my taste. At least by the time he starts shooting these episodes he'll be older. Maybe he could find a time machine, get in it, age a little and then come back.
There's more about him here from the BBC Website:
He left Northampton aged 18 to study drama and creative writing at University of East Anglia in Norwich.
His work with the National Youth Theatre got him both an agent and his first professional job before graduation.
Smith appeared in Fresh Kills at the Royal Court in 2004, and
then joined the cast of On the Shore of the Wide World which
transferred to the National Theatre. It was here that he took over the
role of Lockwood in Alan Bennett's The History Boys.
His West End debut was in Swimming With Sharks opposite
Christian Slater in 2007. In 2008 he played opposite Lindsay Duncan in
That Face to critical acclaim at London's Duke of York's Theatre.
He is now following in the footsteps of one of the most popular actors ever to play the Doctor.
Screen Daily:
Matt Smith was already attracting attention for his subtle and intelligent performances in two BBC dramas, the period thriller Ruby In The Smoke and contemporary twentysomething ensemble piece Party Animals, when his compelling turn in That Face at London's Royal Court, alongside Felicity Jones and Lindsay Duncan, proved Smith to be a versatile and watchable young actor. He
is winning illustrious fans - David Hare and Jane Campion are just two
names to have singled him out. Smith has recently had his first
experience of film work, playing the young version of Ralph Fiennes'
character in Martin McDonagh's In Bruges, and is now filming the second series of the acclaimed Bafta-winning BBC series The Street.
I'll have details from around the web later in the day and after I watch Confidential.
Clip after the jump. Warning, I don't like his hair. AT ALL!
