Must Read for Scifi Geeks -- Space 1999 Feature in the NY Times
I have to admit that until this moment, I had no idea what the show was really about, but apparently, this is the explanation:
Bad enough that while tending to a enormous nuclear-waste dump on the Moon their deadly sludge exploded one day, knocking them and Earth’s only natural satellite out of orbit to wander through the galactic void. Adding insult to injury, they endured this fate in swishy, bell-bottomed trousers, wide belts and chunky, high-heeled boots.
Typically, all I remembered of the show were the bell-bottoms, belts and boots. But c'mon, look at these outfits above (actually, hold on a moment while I tour Google images for something to place here). How could I not remember the costumes.
Yeah, I knew I'd find something. Look at Barbara Bain and Martin Landau. Landau actually looks like he's wearing one of the standard-issue Boca Raton jogging suits. And the Times' Thomas Vinciguerra is right, those clothes did not hide anything. It's just possible that the reason Bain isn't facing the camera here is that she was sporting a camel toe.
This show was produced by Gerry and Sylvia Anderson, who were the creative forces behind Thunderbirds and Captain Scarlet (Scarlet being my all time favorite show that utilized the process called Supermarionation). So, you really can't blame them, they just weren't used to dressing actual human beings.
There's a new DVD collection of these shows that was released to celebrate the 30th Anniversary of the show, and you can find out more about that by clicking over to Amazon at this link.
