The SAG Awards, once again, is not an award show for those who have resisted cosmetic surgery, though I think that we should award people for such. That the SAG Awards have become a big deal, however, is a tribute to each member of the actors' union who continue to press the issue that it's important because it's an award from other actors. Saying it over and over again seems to have worked. This is what a union does, it protects its own.
One of the members of that union, Rizzoli and Isles star Angie Harmon, is THE social media ambassador of the show, meaning she'll be tweeting during the show. I get that, she's a star on a TNT show that's returning soon. She's also a Republican, and Republicans don't much like unions. I of course cordially invite Angie to leave the union and see if she can get an acting gig without her SAG card.
Okay, enough of that. I did reasonably well with my Golden Globes TV predictions so I thought I'd try again. And it's all after the jump.
Drama Ensemble/The Good Wife -- I'm hampered here by not seeing more than one episode of Boardwalk Empire. Honestly I was just bored to tears, despite my heightened interest in Steve Buscemi's career (we went to high school together). I figure it's between them and The Good Wife this year. Lots of actor's actors on the CBS show, that could boost their chances. I like the Dexter cast most of all, with Mad Men second. The Closer I don't think has a shot at this, but look for a lot of closeups of their cast as they're almost finished their run.
Comedy Ensemble/30 Rock -- Because this award should be given to the funniest cast. It's a comedy. Other shows go for message and tone while Tina and crew are first and foremost interested in the laugh. And I love almost the rest of the noms (okay, I don't enjoy watching The Office, I just hate their tone). If it's Modern Family I won't be too bent out of shape.
Actor, Drama/Bryan Cranston -- I don't even watch Breaking Bad anymore, it's too distressing for me, frankly. The Globes passed Cranston over but I don't think the SAG voters will. This role, this actor, this time ... you would not have guessed it, but he's just so good here you gotta hand it over. Any one of these guys (maybe not Hugh Laurie, the bloom is off the rose that is House) could win.
Actress, Drama/Glenn Close -- This is the final season of Damages on DirecTV, which I know was not widely seen, but these actors got their screeners and watched and it's Glenn Frickin' Close after all. Also could be Julianna. Mariska Hargitay would totally win this if SVU were shot in Los Angeles.
Actor, Comedy/Uh Oh -- Alec Baldwin or Chris Colfer? 30 Rock or Glee? ROFL funny or humorous while on message? And how about Ty Burrell, who dances on a tightrope every week on Modern Family? My heart goes with Colfer, my brain with Baldwin. I really like Ty Burrell, however. What bodypart should I assign to him? And before you answer that, know that I like Burrell, but I don't LIKE Burrell.
Actress, Comedy/Tina Fey -- Though Betty White could get a sentimental nod, I gotta go Tina over Jane Lynch and Sofia Vergara. And though I love Edie Falco I just don't consider Nurse Jackie a comedy. It's difficult to place her performance against the rest here and compare anything.
Actor, Miniseries or Movie/Al Pacino -- Of the noms I only saw Patrick Stewart in David Tennant's Hamlet. He won't win. So who? Pacino for You Don't Know Jack, he's a legend. Just a guess.
Actress, Miniseries or Movie/Claire Danes -- There are three actresses in this category from Temple Grandin and I STILL think Claire has it. She's run the table if she wins this one, I think. And you know Temple herself will be there and she's a pleasure, someone who actually gets to go to the show and let us see her genuine enthusiasm. Love that! Claire should get the award just because of that.
