I. LOVE. THIS. SHOW.
Okay, so it's a show about a guy who talks to a dog, a dog that steals the neighbors' marijuana plants and can make a bong out of a Gatorade bottle. That's my dream life.
Or maybe Ryan (Wood) is the only one who can hear him. Maybe Ryan is the only person who sees Wilfred as a guy in a dog suit who looks like Jason Gann, one of the Australian co-creators (with Adam Zwar) of the show.
Or, maybe Ryan is hallucinating all of this. After all he took all the anti-anxiety meds, the whole bottle, that his sister prescribed for him instead of showing up for his first day of work as a contracts administrator in the hospital sis works in. Maybe this dog next door, Wilfred, who lives with the lovely Jenna (Fiona Gubelmann), is just a dog.
In any event, we'll have thirteen half-hours this Summer to try to figure it out for ourselves.
I watched the Australian version of this show last year on IFC and Sundance, and I think it might work even better here. There's something about Gann being the only person with an accent that makes his interaction with Wood even more compelling. Gann's also much taller than Elijah and that's always good for visual humor. And maybe, though it might just be his voice juxtaposed with all the American accents, Wilfred seems even more subversive now.
Ethan Suplee (My Name is Earl) appears as the neighborhood's resident weed-growing, Harley riding nuisance, who by the end of the pilot has a target for his rage and it's not the dog. Of course it's not the dog, why would a dog break a window and steal two huge pot plants? How would he, how could he?
Wilfred premieres this Summer on FX in a hour block of comedy that will include the second season of Louie. I'll keep you in the loop until then with previews as they come.
