Dexter Returns Sunday With New Players and An Accidental Murder
Ever since I found Dexter on my Showtime VOD channel between seasons one and two, I've been hooked. Strange for me in that there's blood and murder and stuff like that and I'm not really one for the procedurals or the cop shows (though I admire the oeuvre of Dick Wolf. The CSI guys? Not so much).
Really, my love of the show started with Michael C. Hall, who I found very authentic playing the gay brother on Six Feet Under, though I only watched the first season. Because Dex is a very different guy from David Fisher I was very much blown away by what I saw and I was hooked.
Dexter Morgan is a guy who studies blood splatter for the Miami PD during the day and makes blood splatter at night. Not that he needs the business, there are plenty of murders without Dex adding to the total. But he is compelled to kill, and kills the bad guys because he adoptive Dad channeled his "disease" into the only positive channel he could.
Always nice to see Dad's take an interest in their kids, huh?
In the two seasons that we've seen you would think we've seen it all, but the one thing we haven't seen starts the ball rolling. There's an accidental death. That's something that doesn't happen much on this show.
And Sgt. Doakes, Dex's nemesis for the last two seasons, is now gone, blown up really good in that shack in the Everglades thanks to Lila, who's also gone (but to another network and another show).
So,the new guy is, as you might know, Jimmy Smits. Hall says about Smits (USA Today):
"The relationship will be the central arc of the season," says Hall, 37. "It's sort of the trunk of the tree with many branches. Initially, it sheds light on Dexter's simultaneous aversion for and attraction to this idea of connection. He's in unchartered territory."
The Emmy-nominated Hall says he relished working with Emmy winner Smits (NYPD Blue, The West Wing). "Jimmy's been fantastic. He brings such a complexity and gravity to the character," Hall says. "He's an incredibly fine actor; it's a real shot in the arm for the show."
Smits plays Assistant DA Miguel Prado, and Hall's relationship is very complicated by the stuff that happens in the beginning of the premiere episode. That "stuff?" An accidental murder, Dexter's first.
He's usually good at finding his victim and completing the task, but Dex makes a big mistake that sets up the big story arc of the season.
And there's more.
This, I believe, finally, is Jennifer Carpenter's year. Not only is she returning as Debra Morgan, Dex's sis, but she also has two films going on (Battle in Seattle with Charlize Theron, the quality project, and Quarantine, her Halloween- scheduled horror flick).
And this season Debra finds herself being pursued by a couple of people, one being a cop new to the dept. named Quinn and the other a hot little female Internal Affairs cop that I kept mistaking for a hooker when she showed up on screen.
On the dating front, Dex is still with Rita, and as I have told you previously, Rita is hungry -- hungry for food and hungry for a little Dex lovin'. Ravenously. And there's a big big reveal at the end of the episode that you'll LOVE!!!
So, here's a clip with Dex and Rita after the jump, the show starts Sunday, I've seen it and you don't wanna miss it. I hope I haven't spoiled too much for you.
This is the kind of show I watch and then half way through it I realize that every muscle in my body is involuntarily tensed. You'll enjoy it. Don't have Showtime? Go buy the first two seasons on DVD and pretend you do have Showtime, but you also have a time machine.
